Put In Bay!

Finally, I'm writing in here. Here's how the trip to Put In Bay went so far:

We left on Friday morning and on our way up there, we stopped at Castalia--home of the Blue Hole. That's what it is--a big blue hole. The water is 22 feet deep (and looks blue) and it's 50 degrees or so year round, fed by underground streams. They use water from it for a fish hatchery. It's not the original Blue Hole (it closed in the early 90's) but there are several of them around the area. My Grandma remembers going with Grandpa and my mom there. She had made my mom and herself matching dresses that they wore there.

Then, we drove on up to where we caught the ferry to South Bass Island (Put In Bay). We parked the car and dragged our luggage onto the ferry. It was about a 20 minute ride over.

We checked into the B&B we were staying at--The Toledo House. It was really nice and smelled like new carpet!

We looked around in the shops until I found "The Put In Bay Bar Crawl" shirt I'd seen 7 years ago. It has a picture of almost every bar on the front and a place for the bartender's initials underneath, as well as a place for you to sign before you begin and afterwards. My "before" is WORSE than my "after"!! I didn't do the bar crawl in one day, but two. I'm not stupid...I'm no longer in college. I learned that lesson back in January of 1997.

Since it was such a nice day, we went up in Perry's Victory Monument (where the Americans defeated the British in the War of 1812) and saw the Ohio Mainland and the other islands. It's taller than the Statue of Liberty and it can be seen from where we boarded the ferry on the Mainland.

We browsed and got a drink here and there as we meandered our way around. I'm going to have to quit right here because I'm going to have to pull my diary out to remember what all we did!

We also went to the Perry's Monument museum. We were looking for shot glasses everywhere and almost every bar had one! I got one that had all the bars on Put In Bay on it and also one that had all the Lake Erie Islands on it. We were also looking for thimbles, decks of cards and keychains. The family who hosts the 4th of July has 3 daughters and one collects thimbles and another collects playing cards. The other one told me she'd START collecting keychains if someone gave one to her. I found 2 keychains and 2 decks of cards and one thimble. Grandma has an old one that her neighbor gave to her years ago and we're passing that onto the girl who collects them. I enjoy looking for things like that. They've been such great family over the years...hosting us all and including Grandma and Shane and I and even letting me stay down there years ago when I was visiting a friend in Cincinnati.

I started the bar crawl. I'm not in college anymore and I know my limit. I drank 6 drinks over the course of the day. We had an early night. The bed was so soft and both of us slept really well!

About 2 years ago a high school friend and I went to Key West. Down there they have the Duval street crawl. Duval street is where Jimmy Buffet's bar "Margarittaville" is and after a 20 hour drive I was ready for a few drinks! We were going to try and do the whole crawl but thought better of it, heh. I settled for a margarita and a cheese burger in paradise. ;-)
